2nd Student English Speech Competition & Global Student Leadership Camp 2016

Mikhaela Baluyot ranked 7th place while Sarah Mae Enriquez was one of the top 20 finalists in the 2nd Student English Speech Competition organized by Daegu Health College (DHC) and the Association of Universities from Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) held at DHC Daegu, South Korea on August 12-13, 2016. Thirty nine contestants from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand competed on the said event.
After the two-day competition, the participants joined the five-day Global Student Leadership Camp on August 13-18 that included activities and lecture on leadership, basic Hanggul lessons, cultural presentation, cooking Korean authentic dishes competition, K-pop dance class and city tour.
The two selected representatives were from the Balanga Campus (BC) and the Main Campus (MC). Baluyot was a 3rd year BSE major in English student from BC and Enriquez was a 4th year BS Tourism student from MC.

August 11, 2016
The BPSU delegation together with other participants arrived at Daegu International Airport where they were welcomed by the DHC staff at around eight in the evening. The participants from different countries in Asia and the Pacific were housed at the DHC dorm.

August 12, 2016
Baluyot and Enriquez delivered individual speech on the theme “Live Your Dreams”. Thirty nine participants from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand competed on the first day of the event. Twenty contestants were selected after the first round of the competition, who will compete for the final round on the second day. Both Baluyot and Enriquez qualified as finalists.
The first day of the competition was graced by the presence of Dr. Sunghee Nam, president of Daegu Health College; Dr. Ricardo P. Pama, Secretary General of AUAP; and Dr. Kyung-yong Kim, Director of International Relations Office of Daegu Healt h College.

August 13, 2016

For the final round, the participants were given two questions by the member of the panel of judges. Baluyot and Enriquez delivered an impromptu speech based on the questions given to them. Eight students were given recognition for Baluyot landed on the 7th place.their outstanding performance in the final round among 20 contestants.

August 14, 2016
All the participants were given time to explore the downtown with Korean student-guides in the afternoon while the morning served as their rest hours after the two-day speech competition. The participants were able to get to know each other better as they toured around downtown.

August 15, 2016
The first day of the Global Student Leadership Camp started with on campus activities. An orientation was held at the DHC Conference Room facilitated by Dr. Kyung-yong Kim followed by warm-up group activities.
The entire group headed to a Buddhist Temple to learn more about the culture and traditions of Korea after a sumptuous lunch in a Korean buffet restaurant. Afterwards, the participants were housed at the Daegu Health College BOHYUN Training Institute, a DHC Campus in the mountainous city of Miryang. In the evening of the same day, the cultural performances followed. Baluyot and Enriquez sang two OPM songs to the audience.

August 16, 2016
The participants travelled down to the city of Busan before lunchtime. They spent the entire day around the sandy beach of Hae-undae. They also had the chance to shop in the malls along the busy streets of the town. The day ended with a trip back to the DHC dorm where the participants prepared for their volunteer work for the following day.
August 17, 2016
The morning was well spent at the Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled in Daegu where the participants were introduced to the various programs of the rehabilitation center. The participants also had the chance to look at the facilities of the center and to play with the people who live there.
Before heading back to DHC, the participants had lunch at a Western and Asian buffet restaurant in the city. After lunch, a special lecture on global leadership was facilitated by Teknalbder Winesberry, a professor at DHC. The lecture was followed by a group discussion and presentation.

August 18, 2016
On the last day of the Global Student Leadership Camp, a special lecture on Korean culture was facilitated by Prof. Kyung-yong Kim. He taught the participants basic Hanggul reading and writing. Right after the lecture, the participants were led to the Hotel Restaurant and Culinary Department where culinary professors demonstrated how to prepare bibimbap, a Korean dish. The participants were then grouped into 12 and each group was given the ingredients to prepare their own bibimbap. Two groups were named the winner in the cooking challenge.
A group of participants from India presented their research project on thermal energy and demonstrated how their output can be beneficial to all industries.
After the cooking challenge, the participants were given a K-pop dancing challenge. The activity was followed by the distribution of certificates to the participants and tutors.
The camp ended with parting words from the president and the vice president of Daegu Health College.

August 19, 2016
The BPSU delegation bound for Manila arrived at Daegu International Airport at 2:30 PM.
