Speech to be delivered by Dr. Gregorio J. Rodis
for the 2016 BPSU Commencement Exercises
(March 29 and 30, 2016/People’s Center, City of Balanga, Bataan)

sirgreg2To the VIPs who are present in our today’s ceremony , and who are headed by our distinguished guest who will be formally introduced in the later part of my speech, our University Vice-Presidents—Dr. Emmanuel C. Macaraeg, Dr. Edmundo C. Tungol, and VP Rudy C. Flores; our Campus Directors; Service Directors and Deans who are with us today; my dear faculty members and non-teaching employees; Batch 2016 graduates; happy and proud parents and loved ones; friends, ladies and gentlemen, a very pleasant day to one and all!

This graduation ceremony shall be a memorable one for me because this is my first formal graduation as Bataan Peninsula State University’s president.  Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to achieve my first goal for this graduation ceremony.  To do this, I am humbly requesting your indulgence.  I also would like to request the following persons to stand and to remain standing until I have called everyone:

  • University and campus officials
  • Faculty members
  • Non-teaching personnel

Ladies and gentlemen, these are the men and women of BPSU.  Each of them has contributed to the advancement and progress of our University.  I am deeply grateful to all of them who work for the University—from the rank-and-file up to the top officials, both in the teaching and the non-teaching sectors.  Their hard work and dedication were pivotal in the many achievements BPSU gained in the previous academic year. Let us give them a big, big hand!  Salamat po!  You may now be seated.

This pledge is testified by the development initiatives that the University has been aggressively pursuing for almost a year now in order to better equip students.  These initiatives are well along government thrusts, and consciously adhere to regulations and processes.  All these combined shall contribute to future generations of graduates who shall reign supreme in the disciplines and specializations BPSU is currently offering.

Today, you, graduates, are setting off on your next adventure.

The rest of your life is just beginning, and this graduation is but a baby step closer to all the possibilities that await you in life.  You have been prepared by BPSU during your transformative years, and it’s your choice now what you shall do with your knowledge and skills.

I know that all of you dream of being successful, of travelling to exotic places, of being financially empowered so that you may offer the good life to your loved ones.  Daisaku Ikeda said that “the greatest and most enduring triumph as a human being lies in knowing that one is doing one’s best”.

I firmly believe that because of your education in BPSU, you will not go down a road that is wrong for you.  I am convinced that if not in the country, you shall make your mark in other parts of the world where different forms of challenges await you.  There are those of you who may find that success takes longer than expected, but that is okay.  When this happens, you will get confused, or decide to wait for something to happen before you make any decision.  You will also face various circumstances that will evidently reveal things about yourself that you are not aware of.  You will discover how strong you really are, or how weak you can become.  You will also meet people who will question your abilities and your worth, or challenge you.  But no matter what, you must take heart and never give in to failure and accept a life of mediocrity: DO NOT DO THAT TO YOURSELF.  You owe yourself, your family and your school a stellar life.  You should keep your eye on the goal, and keep on doing your best.

Graduates, the world is waiting for you.  Explore it through your own humanity.  Be guided by your higher self.  Don't be dissuaded or discouraged.  Sometimes, you just have to let life take you on its glorious journey.  And the best time to do it is now—when you're young and full of curiosity and have no fear.  Don't constrain yourself with expectations of success.  Success will be a by-product of the life you lead.  Go to your destinies, conquer your mountains and your BPSU family shall pray for you until you reach the summit.

At this point, I have the honor to introduce to you a fine example of someone who has admirably used his intellect and talent for others.  Noteworthy is the fact that even though he has achieved so much, he continues to forge ahead—finding new mountains to conquer.
